ITR is required to be filed online with the Digital Signature in some cases but filing of ITR without the digital signature can also be done. The e-file income tax return is although mandatory but the filing of ITR with the Digital Signature is not mandatory.
The income tax return is normally filed by the following modes:
(i) Furnishing of return in a paper form;
(ii) Furnishing of return electronically under the digital signature;
(iii) Filing of return without digital signature electronically and then its verification in Form ITR V.
(iv) Furnishing of a bar-coded return in a paper kind of form.
This article will focus on the steps that by which a taxpayer can file ITR online with or without using a digital signature.
E-filing without using Digital Signature Certificate
Steps to be followed are:
Step 1: Prepare the Income Tax Return and then generate XML. Save the XML file in a suitable folder.
Step 2: If the taxpayer is not registered, then the taxpayer is required to register PAN at Income Tax e-filing portal and then log in.
Step 3: Click on ‘Submit your Return’ for the respective ITR Form.
Step 4: Taxpayer has to select XML file which was saved earlier.
Step 5: Click on the “Submit” button. It will verify the return and generate the ITR V with an Acknowledgement number.
Step 6: Sign the copies of ITR V through the Authorised Signatory.
Step 7: Send a copy of the ITR V to Income Tax Department at CPC, Bengaluru. The taxpayer will be intimated on the receipt of the ITR V.
Note: Now, ITR can also be e-verified via Net Banking, Aadhaar OTP or EVC on the Income Tax Department website.
Guidelines to Digital Signing of ITR
The tax department allows DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) to authenticate the tax returns. It is a simple process for the taxpayers.
Uses of DSC as follows:
- Used to file the income tax return.
- DSC is also used for registering and verifying PAN online.
- It is also required for filing TDS statement online.
To resolve the technical issues, the tax department has developed a software utility. To use DSC, the taxpayer is required to download this utility in their laptop or personal computer.
Steps in Digital Signing
Step 1: The utility software of Income Tax Department for e-filing DSC, to be downloaded first when the taxpayer is uploading the XML sheet.
Step 2: Then, extract the zip folder and open the utility.
Step 3: Select the valid XML file for e-filing.
Step 4: Selection the type of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Type of DSC is .pfx file and USB token.

Step b: Enter the correct password for selected ‘.pfx’ file.
Step c: After entering the password, generate the Signature file.

Step d: Upload the XML along with generated signature file in the e-Filing portal to complete filing with the DSC.
