Introduction
Challan No/ ITNS 280 is required to be used for tax payment.This payment of Income Tax may be in the form of Advance Tax, Self Assessment Tax, Surcharge etc.

Challan No/ ITNS 280 to pay ITR offline
If the taxpayers wish to pay Income Tax offline (by visiting the bank), can download the Challan No/ ITNS 280 , furnish all the details and deposit to the bank with the payment of income tax.
Challan No/ ITNS 280 to pay ITR online
To pay Income Tax Online, a taxpayer is required to fill the Challan No/ ITNS 280 wherein all requisite details should be furnished by the taxpayer.
The following instructions to be followed while furnishing Challan No/ ITNS 280
Tax Applicable
- Select 0020: If the Income Tax is levied on a company
- Select 0021: if the income tax is levied on other than companies (Partnership Firm, LLP, individual etc).
PAN no. & full name
The taxpayer should carefully furnish the PAN no. details. Option for mentioning the name of the taxpayer is not there because it would automatically fetch from the details of PAN no.
Assessment Year
The year should be selected carefully for tax payment as it displays previous year’s options as well.
Type of Payment
Type of payment mentioned in Challan No/ ITNS 280 is
- Advance Tax: if the tax is being paid for same financial year on estimated income
- Self Assessment Tax: if tax is paid after the end of financial year
- Tax on Regular Assessment
Bank Name
Name of the bank through which online payment will be made.
Amount of Tax
The amount of tax would be mentioned on the bank website, not on the challan.
Tax payment of Advance Tax
The following instructions to be followed:
Click on Advance tax in Type of Payment. Confirm data page with all the entries made in the advance tax form and click on ‘submit to the bank’.
Make the tax payment through your bank account and save the tax challan for the future reference.
It is important for the taxpayer to keep a copy of challan that contains Challan Identification Number (CIN).
Income tax department has provided the facility to the taxpayer to check their challan status and that payment has reached the tax department or not.
