BIS Certification for Footwear in India

The BIS is a national standard authority that stands as the "Bureau of Indian Standards". This governing authority was established on December 23, 1986, and the headquarters are located in Manak Bhawan, Old Delhi. To manage the products' activities more transparently, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, established a new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act 2016. But it came into action on 22nd March, 2016. The mandatory use of the applicable Indian standard was confirmed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

On the other side, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has categorized the 380 products under its compulsory certification scheme. It means the products that have been categorized by the national authority need to meet quality and safety standards. The IS mark for footwear, which can be used after footwear products certification, verifies that the shoes and other products, like canvas boots for miners, comply with Indian standards.
