Who Needs SIMS Registration in India?

ARN (Automatic Registration Number) is a mandatory identifier issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for importers. The code is required to bring the specific steel products to India. SIMS Registration Fees (Government Charges)
Before August 2023, the general DGFT fee for SIMS registration was INR 1 per thousand of aggregate CIF value, minimum Rs 500, and maximum 1,00,000. But, as of August 2023, it has been revised to a flat rate of Rs 500. Now, the importing businesses can easily obtain an Automatic Registration Number (ARN) for specific steel items.
Note: Apply for SIMS registration to obtain ARN before 60 days of shipment arrival in the designated country.
What is the SIMS ARN Validity & Timeline
The new notification was effective on June 20, 2025, by the Ministry of Steel, which includes updates about SIMS ARN validity and the registration processing timeline.
ARN Validity
In India, the Automatic Registration Number (ARN) is valid for 75 days from its approval date. In these 75 days, ARN can be used for multiple consignments for the same product. Once the validity is complete, you are required to apply for a new application for each import because SIMS registration ARN is not renewable.
Registration Timeline
SIMS registration is mandatory to apply between 60 days and 7 days before the arrival of the consignment. But here are exceptions included for a few countries.
- If steel goods are coming from Nepal and Bhutan, a 2-day deadline is specified.
- Apply before 4 days for Oman and the UAE.
- 5 days for Singapore, Malasyiya and Indonesia.
